Am Montag, den 16. April 2018, findet ab 17.15 Uhr  ausnahmsweise im Schottensaal des Schottenstifts (1010 Wien, Freyung 6, Eingang im Hof rechts, 1. Stock) das 222. Institutsseminar des Instituts für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung statt. Es spricht Christopher de Hamel vom Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, zum Thema:

„Austrian Monastic Books and Their Market in Britain and America in the 1930s and 1940s“

Abstract: Manuscripts from Austrian monastic libraries arriving in Britain and America in the 1920s and 1930s were rather like refugees, admired for their scholarship and tenacity but not really welcome. They were mostly not to the taste of collectors of that time. They were difficult to sell. They were handled mainly by booksellers who were themselves immigrants, like E. P. Goldschmidt (1887–1954), who had moved from Vienna to London in 1923. Now, 80 years later, these former refugees among manuscripts have become very fashionable indeed and can be shown to have transformed the taste of modern British and American bibliophily.
