Medieval Manuscripts Summer School

The joint Slovak-Austrian summer school, which will be taking place from 2 – 6 September 2019 in Klosterneuburg and Vienna, is intended for advanced students of master and doctoral programs (history, archival science, classical philology, literature, and other related fields) especially from the partner universities. The aim is to acquaint students with practical aspects of working with medieval manuscripts and to convey the technical skills necessary to do research on them. This inludes describing, cataloguing, editing and using medieval manuscripts in the context of historical research as well as in public presentations. In addition, training will include an introduction to digital editing and cataloguing in web-based databases. Lecturers and experts will provide basic theoretical introductions; instruction will be focused on practical aspects of codicological and paleographical description of manuscripts, material aspects of manuscript production, digitisation and digital presentation of manuscript material, and lots of hands-on experience of medieval codices.
The participants will work in small groups with examples from the rich manuscript collection of the library of Klosterneuburg. Excursions in Klosterneuburg and the Manuscript department of the Austrian National Library in Vienna are part of the programme. The language of instruction will be English.
